California Nurses Association Endorses Rafael Mandelman for District 8 Supervisor
Union calls Mandelman a long-time supporter of health care who will protect neighborhood medical services
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The California Nurses Association (CNA), a premiere organization of registered nurses and one of the nation’s fastest growing labor and professional organizations, today announced that it has endorsed attorney Rafael Mandelman for District 8 Supervisor in November. CNA represents thousands of registered nurses in San Francisco.
“Health care affects every person, every family and every kid in District 8. Of all the candidates in the race, Rafael Mandelman has the strongest, most consistent record of standing up to ensure our health care system works properly and provides the care San Franciscans need, when they need it,” said Malinda Markowitz, RN, co-President of the California Nurses Association.
“Rafael is committed to protecting Healthy San Francisco during these tough economic times, and he will fight to retain vital neighborhood health care services,” Markowitz continued. “He’ll also make sure that private health care facilities, who make millions from San Francisco, meet their obligations to provide our community with the medical services we need.”
“I am honored to have CNA’s endorsement,” said Mandelman. “Nurses serve on the front lines of the health care crisis every day and they understand how important it is for public officials to pay attention to this issue. CNA has led the nation as an advocate for quality patient care, safe staffing and holding insurance companies accountable. The organization is renowned for its advocacy on behalf of patients, with programs that have helped hundreds of patients with information on how to respond to health care industry abuses, and has assisted patients in bringing their stories to legislative hearings and the media.”
As a member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, Mandelman has sponsored resolutions supporting universal health care, protecting neighborhood health services at St. Luke’s hospital, and protesting cuts to HIV and transgender health programs at UCSF.
The California Nurses Associations joins Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, author of Healthy San Francisco, in endorsing Mandelman. The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, former Supervisor Harry Britt, BART Director BART Director Tom Radulovich, former State Senator Carole Migden, and five of the 11 members on the Board of Supervisors also have endorsed him.
